Today was my first day at my new job, a Claims Advisor for Norwich Union. (Fun Fact I learned at my "Welcome Day" today: NU is the largest insurer in the UK and the 4th largest insurance company in the world, serving over 30 countries.) I will be talking to customers who want to make a claim on their household insurance. The position is obviously not my dream job, but it's a job, which is an answer to prayer. The work environment is very pleasant, allows me a lot of interaction with people, and...it's temporary. This week is the first of 6 weeks of training and today was very introductory and smooth aside from the drive in, which was, to say the least, traumatic. Mom and Dad, you might want to stop reading here!
I have been practicing my driving for weeks, had the location in my phone SatNav Scotspeak for GPS), and was ready go, except that today was the biggest snow we've seen since arrivinig and the SatNav landed me at a TravelLodge (after a stall out, slide over the ice, and run into or OVER the curb) with no Norwich Union in sight. Wanting to figure out the problem myself, I turned around to go back through the roundabout and ended up on a motorway to Dundee (NOT the right way). The SatNav starts demanding that I "Make a U-Turn", which is NOT possible, I'm driving in blizzard conditions, and I have no idea where I'm going or how to get going the right way. (Yes, I know many of you are SHOCKED). So, after several hazardous calls to Rusty and Anne, I finally get turned around (now 10 miles out of town) and back on my way. To the TravelLodge where I end up again. And this time into a different curb. Ugh. Called Anne again. Got great directions and FINALLY arrived at Norwich Union AND found a parking space, though I was 15 minutes late (when I left early enough to arrive a half hour early). Trying not to cry or freak out futher, I gathered myself and made the long trek down 6 parking lots to the Main Entrance. Thankfully, my interviewers and trainers met me very kindly, made sure I was ok, offered me a tea or coffee (the Scottish cure-all)and caught me up with the group.
So, all in all...job good. Driving? I'm sure I'll do better tomorrow. :)
