In our Wednesday night Bible study, we have been going through 1 Corinthians, in which Paul often makes reference to the fact that God's wisdom is foolishness to the world. During my personal study time, I have been working my way through Matthew. This morning I am reading the Beatitudes, and I am struck by how very true that is. Listen to this...
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matt. 5:3-10)
Sometimes I forget how truly counter cultural the Christian life is, but when I think about the world's "blessed ares" or even America's "blessed ares" (which might be interesting to play around with writing sometime!), I realize they are very opposite of Jesus'.
Father, fill me with your wisdom, quiet my strivings to be blessed in the ways of the world, and make me an instrument of your own crazy kingdom.

Lauren,
More evidence that you are my kindred spirit! =)
I am working on my first sermon for preaching class and I am using the Beatitudes. I am also using my recently acquired "God Bless the Freaks" bumper sticker!
Thanks for posting this. Love you!
Amen Lauren!
Lauren,
I just wanted to thank you for my BEAUTIFUL birthday card (which came right on my birthday!). You were a sweetheart to remember AND get a card sent. I love you for it...and I love you JUST BECAUSE!
Thank you, thank you, thank you,
