Rediscovering Nancy

Yesterday I unpacked a box of mementos I've saved from my childhood. Now that we have some extra space, there's a few items I wanted to display. I also found a home for the rest in the beautiful Hope Chest Randy, Barbara, and Rusty gave me for my birthday several years ago. All of the items brought back great memories. There were paper dolls that my Rosenberg church friends and I passed many afternoons with (their names are still penned on their backs), the Felicity American Girl doll I wanted for years and finally got one Christmas, and most importantly...my books.

I've only saved a few, and most of them are series books like Laura Ingalls Wilder and Grandma's Attic, but the ones I loved best were the Nancy Drews. I don't remember how or when I discovered Nancy, but I spent many hours of my childhood solving crimes with her. I was fascinated with her. Her friends (Bess and George), her wardrobe, her car (a light blue Mustang GT Convertible), her boyfriend (Ned), and most of all, her adventures. Nancy was fearless. I checked out every "case" I could find from the various libraries I visited and bought the rest at bookstores.

Even as a child, reading was one of my passions. I read at school under my desk and after lights out at home, I would stick a book in my pj waistband and sneak off in the bathroom to read in the tub. More often than not, it was a Nancy Drew book in my hand. It gave me such satisfaction to rediscover those yesterday and to put them up on the shelf. Thanks for the memories, Nancy.

Oooh!! I loved Nancy Drew! Thanks for the walk down memory lane! I was the kid that read when I wasn't supposed to also. I got in trouble for reading so much. Who gets in trouble for reading?? Probably because I was reading during class or something. I love "True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" by Avi, "The Great Gilly Hopkins" by Katherine Paterson and sooo many more.

I remember a trip I took to visit you when I was in 6th grade and you introduced me to Nancy Drew. We would sit and read for hours and then go and play teacher. :-)
