Seed Starting
Last night Rusty and I started our first batch of seeds for this year's garden. I've been saving containers for months and for Valentine's Day, Rusty got me seed starting mix and a big grow light, so we had all of the appropriate tools. So far we've started two kinds of tomatoes, cherries, strawberries, basil, parsley, and hot peppers. Next week I'll get a few more going.
Even after all of my reading and asking around I felt pretty unsure about the whole process, but it went a little something like this. Dampen the soil, fill the containers, place and cover the seeds, water, and find a warm little home for them. I must say that the seed packets were a lot more exciting than the seeds themselves; I was shocked by how teeny some of them were, but supposedly they'll grow into beautiful plants with yummy vegetables. We don't have an ideal place for all of these plants-to-be, so I just put them on top of the kitchen cabinets, in hopes that they'll stay warm enough. I also covered them with saran to create a sort of greenhouse effect. It seems like so much could go wrong with these little guys and I'm amazed that anyone manages to grow anything, but whatever. For now, all that's left to do is water them daily and wait for them to sprout!
Stay tuned...
